What are Black Soldier Flies (BSF)?

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, is a valuable insect species whose larvae have enormous potentials for converting organic waste into compost, while the larval biomass generated could also be harvested for its quality protein and fatty acid content. Its rich protein content can match those of conventional protein sources such as Soybean meal and Fishmeal.

Why BSF?

The dry weight of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) contains crude protein (CP) levels ranging from 37 to 63%, up to 35% fatty acids, an amino acid profile that is similar to that of Fishmeal, and an average True Metabolizable Energy (TME) value of 4079 kcal/kg DM. They are recognized and utilized as alternative sources of protein for feed of poultry, pigs, farmed fish, and shrimp.

Unique features of BSF

Unlike other flies and bugs, the BSF is not a vector of disease. It converts ingested organic waste into proteins and fat, which it stores in its body for use throughout its relatively short lifecycle and for the purpose of metamorphosis. This stored protein and fat can be exploited when the larvae reaches adulthood by harvesting them for use in animal feed formulation.

The world needs to grow more food to accomodate projected growth in human population in the coming decades. This demands an exponential increase in animal protein production to match this growth. With the increasing cost of animal feeds, the world needs a more sustainable source of protein to sustain its animal production activities. The popular high quality protein sources (e.g Soybean meal and Fishmeal) are becoming more and more out of reach and expensive to produce and access for the average livestock farmer. To add to that, humans are generating more waste than their capacity to manage, no thanks to growing human population, change in consumption patterns, upward mobility, urbanization, etc. These untreated wastes contribute enormously to the negative effects of climate change being witnessed the world over. And unfortunately, these challenges are more pronounced in low and middle income or developing countries, where much of the earlier mentioned growth are being projected to take place.
